2009 Ice Bowl Wrap Up

The 2009 Ice Bowl has been completed in Ford Park, Redlands. In the end, everyone who participated helped to raise $385.58 for Redlands Family Service. Many thanks to everyone who participated and to Redlands Morning Kiwanis for all of their continued support for Disc Golf in Redlands.

The winners were:

Spring into Summer Fling

Summer is coming (or is here, depending on what you call “summer”). Time for barbecues, beach trips, fireworks, and a disc golf tournament in Ford Park!

June 21, 2008 will be the Spring into Summer Fling Tournament to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Redlands. We’ll be meeting at 9:00 a.m. for a free clinic with youth flights starting at 9:30 a.m. Folks 13 and up will have flights starting at 3:00 p.m.

Youth ages 7-12 play for free, everyone else will pay a $15 entry fee.

Moving Holes

This is a quick notice that the baskets for holes 8 and 9 in Ford Park will be moved in the next week or two.

We’ve found that these holes are just too close to the fenced off area and many discs are heading into that area. The city employees are very kind and collect the lost discs to return to us (if your phone number is on the disc, you’ll get a call). However, many of the discs found in that area are brand new and unmarked. This is good because it means lots of new people are out playing. But bad because it means lots of new people are losing their discs on day one or shortly after. Also, while the city is very kind and encouraging to us disc golfers, we’d like to be as little trouble to them as possible.

This is a good time to mention that it’s very important to label your discs! Disc golfers are generally kind and honest. If they find a disc that has a legible name and phone number on it, they’ll call to return it to you. They’re doing you a solid, so give ‘em a buck or two to say thanks. And when you find a lost disc, return the favor by doing your best to return it. Labeling your disc is like free insurance. You aren’t guaranteed that someone will return a lost disc (or even find a lost disc), but your chances of getting your disc back increase quite a bit when your name and number are clearly marked.

More news will be coming soon about tee signs (yeah, you read that right) and a tournament to kick off the summer season. Until then, happy flinging!

Summer Weeklies

Now that the time has changed, the sun is out later in the evenings, and the weather is warming up, we have some changes to our weekly tournaments in Ford Park.

First off, we are still having a weekly on Mondays and Thursdays during the lunch hour. Starting around 12:15 and playing nine holes before heading back to work (or wherever you spend your days). This weekly includes a rolling Ace pool. This weekly typically uses the official course layout.

Tuesday nights are starting up again meeting anywhere between 5:30 and 6:00. We’re shooting to start around 6:00 and play 9 or 18 holes depending on who shows and how much light we have. Lots of opportunities here for doubles (best or worst shot) and other interesting games. This weekly will use the official or alternate layouts as decided by the group playing.

Lastly, Wednesday nights has people meeting for an alternate, 18 hole course layout. Meet at 4:30 for a twenty minute clinic on various topics each week. Play starts at 5:00.

The weather is beautiful and it’s a great time to be out playing! Stay tuned for news about Saturday tournaments coming up this summer and other news about disc golf in the Inland Empire.

Ice Bowl Update

We just received the following update to the Ice Bowl Tournaments happening nation wide:

The count continues but thanks to the 200 events that have reported, I’m happy to announce these very impressive numbers for Ice Bowl 2008.

Participants/helpers/contibutors: 10,435
Average temperature: 35.74°
Average snow on the ground: 3.10″
Charitable donations in cash: $242,661
Charitable donations in food: 49,807#

With another 40-45 events that we’re hoping to hear from soon, we might just exceed a 1/4 million dollars. I do like the sound of that.

Post-Ice Bowl Report

The first Ice Bowl in Ford Park, Redlands, CA was quite a success. Despite some rainy conditions, lots of mud, and 60 degree weather (give or take), we had 20 people come out for 18 holes of disc golf, a handful of Ring of Fire challenges, and two Closest to Pin contests. We had people come from as far as San Diego to participate in what was the first of the three Triple Crown of Ice Bowls taking place in Redlands, Palm Desert, and San Marcos.

At the end of the day, we raised $170 for Redlands Family Service Association (FSA) as well as collecting 17 cans of food. But the fund raising isn’t over yet. We were able to acquire a limited supply of Champion Destroyers and Star Ontario Rocs that are being sold to raise more money for FSA. The Destroyers are selling for $15 and the Rocs for $25 each. The discs should be available in February and will each have the Triple Crown of Ice Bowls hot stamp. If you are interested in pre-ordering a disc or two, please contact us at icebowl@iedgc.com.

Special thanks go to the Morning Kiwanis of Redlands for their support as well as the City of Redlands for their vision in putting a disc golf course in Ford Park. Also thanks to Gourmet Pizza Shoppe for some Ring of Fire prizes and a place for a great post-tournament lunch.
